In this blog we have already talked to you about Ayurvedic medicine, a traditional medicine from India that considers health as something more than the absence of diseases. According to Ayurveda, a healthy life is one that finds a balance between the soul, the mind, the body and the senses with nature and the cosmos.
Within Ayurvedic medicine we find many Ayurvedic plants that provide us with different benefits depending on their use and application. Some of these herbs are used to make Ayurvedic shampoo, based on natural products and capable of turning hair into a beautiful mantle worthy of a magazine. Here we tell you how to make homemade shampoo with Ayurvedic herbs.
Why use Ayurvedic herbs to make homemade shampoo?
The use of Ayurvedic herbs to make homemade shampoo and apply it to the scalp provides a great number of benefits for the health of our hair. These are just some of the reasons why we should use Ayurvedic shampoo:
- It cleanses both the hair and the scalp very effectively.
- It detangles the hair, thus avoiding the use of conditioners.
- It stimulates hair growth.
- It prevents the formation of dandruff.
- It gives softness and shine to the hair.
- It can be used on all types of hair, especially those that are damaged and weakened, and dyed hair.
Although it is increasingly common to find Ayurvedic shampoos in specialty stores, it is possible to make homemade shampoo with Ayurvedic herbs in solid or liquid formats. It is a very simple process that will allow you to have your shampoo at hand whenever you need it, and it will be much cheaper than buying it already made.
What Ayurvedic herbs can we use to make homemade shampoo?
Before getting into it, you should know that not all Ayurvedic herbs are suitable for making homemade shampoo. The most popular natural herbs used to make Ayurvedic shampoos are shikakai, reetha, bhringraj, amla, neem, multani mitti and fenugreek. Today we are going to talk about only three: shikakai, amla and multani mitti.
- Shikakai: this plant helps with hair loss problems. It is also beneficial for tangled and/or weakened hair.
- Amla: this plant, also called Indian gooseberry, increases blood circulation in the scalp, optimizing the nutrition of the follicles.
- Multani mitti: this plant helps remove impurities from the scalp and gives volume to the hair.
To make your own homemade Ayurvedic shampoo, first you have to get these three plants, as well as the rest of the ingredients. You can find these Ayurvedic herbs, as well as other products from this traditional Indian medicine, in our online store.
What shampoo formats can we make?
With these herbs we can make two types of Ayurvedic shampoo: solid and liquid. The solid shampoo will have a consistency similar to modeling clay, being able to be used as if it were a bar of soap, wetting it before applying it.
On the other hand, the liquid shampoo can be applied as if it were an oil to the hair and left to work before rinsing it with water.
How to make homemade shampoo with Ayurvedic herbs
To make a solid Ayurvedic shampoo you will need to gather the following ingredients:
- 10 grams of shea butter.
- 3 milliliters of castor oil.
- 2 milliliters of jojoba oil.
- 50 grams of S.C.I.
- 10 grams of shikakai powder.
- 5 grams of amla powder.
- 5 grams of multani mitti powder.
- 20 grams of rose water.
Once you have all the ingredients, it is time to make your own solid Ayurvedic shampoo:
- Mix the shea butter, castor oil and jojoba oil in a double boiler.
- When the mixture is ready, remove it from the heat and mix it with the dry ingredients, that is, S.C.I., shikakai, amla and multani mitti.
- Add the rose water to create a kind of paste, with a consistency similar to modeling clay.
- Pour the paste into a mold and let it dry for between 12 and 24 hours.
- After that time, unmold the bar and let it dry in the open air.
And that's it! You already have your solid Ayurvedic shampoo. To apply it to your hair, just wet it and rub your hair with it as if it were a bar of soap.
If you prefer a liquid shampoo, these are the ingredients you need:
- ⅛ cup of amla powder.
- ⅛ cup of shikakai powder.
- ⅓ cup of water. If you want the shampoo to be thicker, add less water.
- 1 tablespoon of argan oil.
- 1 teaspoon of castor oil.
- A few drops of rosemary essential oil (at most 3 drops). This ingredient is optional.
In this case, the preparation process is simpler. Just mix all these ingredients in a bowl to homogenize them and package them. To apply it, as we have already mentioned, you just have to gently massage the hair with this shampoo, leave it to work and rinse it after a few minutes.
And remember: in our online store you will find all the ingredients you need to make these natural shampoos, including the Ayurvedic herbs and the essential oils. You can even opt for this kit of four cold-pressed oils so that it comes out much cheaper.
