When you choose to care for your hair with 100% plant-based dyes, it’s natural to want the color to last, your hair to look healthy, and the process to be worthwhile. But often, without realizing it, we use products that can interfere with the results—from overly harsh shampoos to ingredients that block the plants’ action.
We’ll explain which ingredients to avoid if you use plant-based hair dyes or color, and which products you can use to keep your color looking its best for longer.
Why are some ingredients incompatible with plant-based dyes?
Plant-based color works differently from chemical color. It doesn’t open the cuticle, penetrate the hair fiber, or alter the natural pigment. It coats the hair with a layer of color that gradually sets and intensifies with each wash.
This makes it safer, gentler, and kinder to your hair. But it also means that:
- It needs a balanced environment to set properly.
- It shouldn’t be blocked by ingredients that coat or build up on the hair.
- It shouldn’t be stripped away by overly strong cleansing agents.
That’s why your post-dye hair care routine is just as important as the dye itself.
Ingredients to avoid (and why)
1- Harsh sulfates (such as SLS or SLES)
These surfactants cleanse too aggressively, stripping away not only dirt but also the plant-based coating that adheres to the hair. They can cause the color to fade prematurely.
2- Silicones
Especially water-insoluble ones, such as dimethicone or amodimethicone. They create a film over the hair that prevents plant-based pigment from adhering properly in subsequent applications.
3- Drying alcohols
Alcohol denat., isopropyl alcohol, or benzyl alcohol (when not buffered) can dry out the hair and scalp, making the color look dull or lifeless.
4- Artificial fragrances and synthetic dyes
They can cause sensitivity and disrupt the scalp’s balance. It’s better to choose natural formulas.
5- Shampoos with a very high pH
A high pH opens the cuticle and weakens the hold of plant-based dye. It’s best to use shampoos with a balanced pH (between 4.5 and 5.5).
6- Harsh preservatives such as parabens, triclosan, or imidazolidinyl urea
They can cause irritation, especially after a plant-based treatment, and affect scalp health.
