Many people who discover plant-based hair color do so for more than just aesthetic reasons. They do it because their scalp is calling for a change: hair loss, oiliness, itching, sensitivity… signs that something isn’t right.
What you may not know is that plant-based dyes can help improve these hair and scalp imbalances. They don’t just color your hair—they truly care for it.
In this post, we’ll explain how they work and what you can do to care for your scalp if you’re experiencing any of these issues.
1. Hair loss
Noticing more hair in the shower, on your pillow, or in your brush? Hair loss can have many causes, but an irritated or weakened scalp is one of the most common.
At Real Earth, our plant-based dyes are formulated with plants that strengthen the follicle and stimulate growth from the root: amla, lawsonia (henna), cassia…
Real Earth tip:
Massage your scalp weekly with Roots Oil. It was developed in collaboration with Ayurvedic doctors and contains bhringraj, gotu kola, amla, and neem.
It strengthens the follicle, boosts circulation, and helps keep the roots nourished. You can leave it on overnight before washing… or add a few drops directly to your dye mixture.
2. Oily scalp
Does your hair feel greasy soon after washing, or do you have to wash it very often?
Harsh shampoos or occlusive products can disrupt natural sebum production and make the problem worse.
Plant-based dyes, made entirely from plants, help restore the scalp’s natural balance without clogging or overwhelming it.
Some plant-based dye blends contain cassia, such as Blonde Henna or Caramel Henna, which helps regulate oil without drying out the scalp and gently purifies it.
Real Earth tip:
Between color treatments, apply the Oil Balance Hair Mask once a week. It helps regulate sebum without irritating the scalp.
If you need a lightweight oil, choose Jojoba Oil: it regulates oil without making your hair greasy and is ideal for oily or sensitive scalps.
3. Sensitive or itchy scalp
If you notice itching, redness, or a burning sensation, your scalp may be irritated by harsh ingredients.
Plant-based dyes don’t penetrate or oxidize; they coat the hair fiber like watercolor on paper. They contain no ammonia, peroxides, silicones, or synthetic fragrances.
That’s why they’re better tolerated by sensitive skin. Even so, if your scalp is very sensitive, you can enrich the mixture with pure neem oil.
Real Earth tip:
Add a few drops of Neem Oil to your color mixture, or massage your scalp weekly with neem oil diluted in jojoba. It soothes and purifies, and strengthens the scalp’s barrier.
4. Dandruff or flaking
Dandruff is not just a cosmetic issue: it is often caused by an imbalance in the scalp microbiome. This ecosystem can be disrupted by harsh products, excessive washing, or even stress.
By avoiding chemicals, silicones, and synthetic fragrances, the scalp can breathe, regenerate, and restore its natural balance.
The plants in our dyes, such as cassia, act as gentle purifiers, ideal for soothing and restoring balance.
Real Earth tip:
Apply Neem Oil diluted in Jojoba Oil once a week. Massage it into your scalp and leave it on for at least 30 minutes before washing.
Because caring for your color also means caring for yourself
Plant-based hair color does more than cover gray hairs or enhance your beauty. It is a way to reconnect with yourself, listen to what your scalp needs, and give it a break.
And when you experience sensitivity, hair loss, or an imbalance, switching products can be the start of a real transformation.
