Why your vegetable-based hair dye doesn't cover gray hair well, and how to fix it step by step

If you have tried vegetable dye and felt that it doesn't cover your gray hair well, you are not alone.

Many women come to us with the same feeling:
“I love the idea of natural… but it hasn't worked for me as I expected.”

And the reality is that, in most cases, it is not the product… it is the process.

Vegetable coloring does cover gray hair, but it needs to be understood and applied differently than a chemical dye.

Today we want to explain to you, clearly and honestly, what might be going wrong and how to achieve a beautiful, uniform, and lasting result.

The most common mistakes when using vegetable dye.

1. Not doing the two-step process

This is undoubtedly the most important mistake. When there is a lot of gray hair, a single step is usually insufficient.
The hair needs a first base for the color to adhere correctly.

Solution:
Perform a two-step process:

You can see this much more clearly in our Coloring Guide in video format.

2. Using the incorrect water temperature

The water temperature completely changes the result.

Cold water → the pigment does not activate well

Water that is too hot → can alter the color and intensify warm tones

That is why, at Real Earth, we provide personalized advice, and with every order, you receive instructions adapted to your chosen shade.

  • Blonde shades → do not exceed 30ºC
  • Brown and copper shades → between 50ºC and 70ºC (up to 80ºC in some cases)

4. Applying to hair with residues

Residues from products, silicones, or buildup can create a “barrier” that prevents the color from adhering.

Solution:

  1. Wash beforehand with a clean shampoo (silicone-free). At Real Earth, we offer a hair care line designed to maintain vegetable color. Access it here.
  2. Avoid conditioners or products before application.

You can use a silicone-free conditioner after rinsing out the vegetable dye with water only, to make combing easier. Our favorite options:

5. Expecting an immediate result

Vegetable dye does not finish its process upon rinsing. The color evolves over the following 48–72 hours (oxidation).

Solution:

  • Do not judge the result on the same day
  • Wait at least 72h before washing with shampoo
  • Observe the color once it has fully oxidized

How to achieve good gray coverage (step-by-step)

If you want to simplify it, this would be a good starting point:

  1. Wash your hair with a silicone-free shampoo
  2. Prepare the mixture with the correct temperature
  3. Apply evenly, covering all gray hairs well. Do not skimp on product and saturate well.
  4. Leave on for the recommended time
  5. If you have a lot of gray hair → perform a two-step process
  6. Be patient with the oxidation

Most importantly: understand your hair

Every head of hair is different. Not all gray hair reacts the same way, nor do they all need the same process. That is why, beyond following a guide, the important thing is to learn to observe your hair and adapt the mixture to you.
