Want to try plant-based hair dye but don’t know where to start?
Find out how to cover your gray hair and care for your hair naturally, from home.
If you’re reading this, you’re probably looking for a more natural way to color your hair or cover your gray hair. But you may also have some questions:
Will it work with my hair type? Will it cover my gray hair well? What if my hair turns orange? Is it really 100% natural?
Don’t worry, that’s normal. In this guide, we’ll explain everything you need to know to get started with plant-based dyes without any worries, even if it’s your first time.
What is plant-based hair dye?
Plant-based dyes are made from dyeing plants such as:
Henna, Indigo, Cassia obovata, Amla, hibiscus, walnut…
These plants are ground into a very fine powder. When mixed with warm water, they release their natural pigments and transform into a creamy, yogurt-like consistency that’s easy to apply.
The important thing is that these dyes are: Ammonia-free, Free of harsh chemicals, Free of PPD and preservatives. 100% plant-based and kind to your health and the planet
Benefits of plant-based hair dye
1- Strengthens hair from the roots
2- Adds volume and thickness
3- Leaves your hair with a beautiful natural shine
4- Doesn’t damage the scalp or hair fibers
5- Improves hair health with every application
6- Provides a long-term conditioning effect
Which plant-based hair dye color should I choose?
Plant-based hair dye doesn’t lighten your hair. You can’t go from brunette to blonde, but you can darken your hair, tone it, add very natural-looking highlights, or maintain your color and cover your gray hair.
Keep in mind:
– Your base color
– Whether you have a lot or a few gray hairs
– The result you want

Basic step-by-step instructions:
- Mix the plant-based powder with warm water in a bowl (pay attention to the temperature for each shade, as it affects the final result). Keep stirring until you get a yogurt-like consistency.
- Apply to clean, dry or wet hair using a dye brush. Section your hair to cover the roots thoroughly.
- Cover with a cap and towel to retain heat. This isn’t necessary for light shades.
- Leave on for 40 to 60 minutes, depending on the shade (you can check the processing time in the instructions on each package).
- Rinse with water only (don’t use shampoo for the first 48 hours).
Important: If you have a lot of gray hair, you may need a two-step process to cover it well.
Recommendation: Indigo (found in dark shades such as brown, cocoa, and black) continues to work for up to 72 hours afterward, so we recommend not shampooing until then for better coverage.
