What is neem oil?

Neem oil is a vegetable oil extracted from the seeds of the neem tree (Azadirachta indica), which is native to India and widely cultivated in other parts of Asia and Africa. The neem tree is known for its medicinal properties and is commonly used in traditional medicine to treat a variety of conditions, including infections, skin disorders, and respiratory diseases. Neem oil is also used as a natural pesticide due to its insecticidal and pest-repellent properties. Neem oil is toxic to some insects and can be used to control pests in gardens and crops.

Properties of Neem Oil

The color of neem oil can range from dark brown to yellowish brown depending on the extraction and storage process used. Fresh, high-quality oil is usually dark brown, while low-quality oil or oil stored for an extended period may be more yellowish. The color does not necessarily affect the quality of the oil, but it can indicate how it has been processed and stored.
Neem oil has a characteristic, strong, bitter smell. Some people describe its aroma as similar to basil, but with a sweeter, less fresh note. Neem oil’s smell can also be described as similar to chewing gum or a mixture of garlic and onion. If neem oil does not have a strong, bitter smell, it is probably low quality or has been overprocessed, which can reduce its effectiveness.

How can I use neem oil as an insecticide?

To use neem oil as an insecticide, mix 1 tablespoon of neem oil per 1 liter of water, then spray it on the affected plants. You can also add a little liquid soap to help the oil adhere to the leaves. It is important to apply the treatment on sunny days and not expose the plants to direct sunlight after application. In addition, it is recommended to test it on a small area before applying it to the entire crop to make sure it will not cause damage.

Is neem oil safe for humans?

Neem oil is safe for use on humans as long as it is used properly. However, some people may be sensitive to topical application of the oil and may experience side effects such as itching, redness, or skin irritation. It is recommended to perform a sensitivity test before extensive use. In addition, raw neem oil should not be used in the eyes or on mucous membranes, as it may cause irritation.

In general, we always recommend mixing neem oil at a 50:50 ratio with another vegetable oil for cosmetic use. It is recommended to consult a healthcare professional before using the oil if you have a medical condition or are pregnant or breastfeeding.
